How to create a real community around your website

One of my favorite methods for promoting a new site is to create an online message board where my readers and visitors can talk about both my site and my niche in general. Creating a forum isn’t that difficult form a technical point of view but making it popular is.

Here are a few tips to help.

One of the hardest things about setting up a message board is getting it off the ground in the first place. Getting people posting new topics and more importantly replying to them can be hard when you have just a few members, so you’re going to have to do it yourself in the beginning.

If your forum is attached to your main website or blog then it is going to have a general theme surrounding it. People will often ask you questions in posts on this theme and even though you may not have an exact answer it’s important to at least point people in the right direction, members really appreciate it.

A great way to promote your message board is to talk about it on your main blog or website. However don’t just mention that you have a forum instead tell people that you will sometimes post new info there first ahead of your blog. Some people are desperate to be the first to know and you can use this to your advantage.

Forums are an easy target for both spammers and bots so you have to keep a real eye on who is signing up and what they are posting, otherwise the junk is going to overtake your real content fast. Make sure your sign-up form has a tough captcha and restrict new member’s accounts so they can’t post links.

One of the most important parts of setting up a forum is patience and for most webmasters this is the hardest part to comprehend. What you are aiming for with a great forum is a membership that sustains itself with fresh content so it attracts new members on its own. It can take months or even years to get to this stage though, so you need to be committed to the process in the long haul. I hope these tips help.
